badman: daddy long legs as food? + soldier question (27. Aug 2007 07:04)

at the moment my ants only seem to want to eat peas, they don't want ant jelly or honey.

With autumn on the way I'm expecting the usual plague of daddy long-legs (crane flies).

Would these be appropriate to feed to ants? obviously after dipping them in boilingwater.

Also a questin about Soldiers. in the wild I can see how the Soldier caste is necessary, but in captivity are they produced? if so, do they help in foraging and digging? Or do they just stand guard?

Soldiers do get produced in captivity they help foraging and guarding dont know about digging and i aint sure about daddy long legs

daddy long legs are a fine food for ants last year i fed mine many but the only problem with them is they don't have much lets say meat on them but the are definitely suitable

yeah the legs are pretty worthless, but those long torsos must have something worth eating in there

If it is possible try to give them Red runners (cockroaches) most species love them and they are good for them to. ;)

no cockroaches around here. I know you can breed them yourself, but there's no way my girlfriend would allow that in the house. Ants were bad enough...

need to be careful with cockroaches, as they carry lots of parasites and bacteria

JimmyVe: (29. Aug 2007 15:45)

that is true, you need to boil them first for sure, but my ants love them. ;)

I now how you feel badman, i'm not aloud to breed them myself to. ;) I buy them at the local animal shop.
