MrNixy: Myrmica rubra and PTFE? (11. Aug 2007 01:08)

I have never kept Myrmica rubra but I just ordered a colony from antstore with 51-100 workers.
Was just wondering if anyone knows if PTFE will keep them in, I have some mesh and a lid too but just wondered if PTFE will keep them down when feeding time comes as I hear they are kinda nasty if they want to be .

Regards. :p

Hey,

yes, PTFE works, i keep Myrmica rubra by myself and they are not able to climb over the PTFE. But PTFE is not an insurance that they cant escape, but it makes it easier to lift up the cover and eg feed them. You will need a cover anyway.

In deed, i use it to with this species and it works.
Make the PTFE 3 times as wide as the biggest ants so if you make it like 3cm wide it will be just fine.

Cheers guys! Ill be sure to make it nice and wide Jimmy!

Just wondering but does vaseline work too ???

vaseline works a bit and better if you put veggie oil on it aswell, but it onty helps if the ants don't like it, M.rubra eventualy gets used to it and will sometimes walk over it. i would use PTFE instead, so far it has not let me down.

Yes , PTFE works , but you must take care because Myrmica rubra is not much "inteligent" and if is much hungry or in aggresive situation , can walk over it ;) ... for dead price , but can
