jon2thefish: Golden syrup (19. Jul 2007 23:09)

Having no honey @ the moment, I tried three of my queens on an extremely small drop of syrup on cotton buds, but i havent seen any of them try it yet, has anyone tried syrup on queen ants?

Its ok for the sugar content, but it doesnt contain the vitamins and other things that ants need that u find in honey

oh hell, right back to Tescos for some honey, bought a banana today just waiting for it to go bad now to catch some fruit flies.. God help me if i start trying south america species. Gonna try and get a wingless culture on monday.

what exactly are you feeding your L. niger queens on @ the moment miszt?

miszt: (20. Jul 2007 00:33)

I'm using a mixture of diffrent things, i've got a honey solution with powdered fish flakes in, and dead wingless fruit flys, they love em :D all 20 queens have huge piles of eggs already

miszt: (20. Jul 2007 00:34)

u dont have to wait for the banana to go bad, juzt mash it up n leave it outside :D

jon2thefish: (20. Jul 2007 00:43)

well fish flakes are not a problem, right mashed up banana tomorrow. Do you place ur fruit flies in hot water to kill them or freeze them?

ashhad1: (20. Jul 2007 08:52)

Every insect i catch and want to feed my ants I put the insect in really hot water (from kettle). The mites are dead (if any) and the insect dies quik with no pain. use tweezers though or your fingers burn lol

jon2thefish: (20. Jul 2007 09:54)

lol mmmm right i must remember not to place my fingers into boiling water good tip  , ashhad you sound like a person talking from experience <GG>.

Ive tried some tropical flake, high protein powder and high protein catfish pellets, but no takers @ the moment. Saying that though they havent taken a fly i placed in either, but theyre are enjoying sugar water. This is my Rubra colony i'm referring to.
