jon2thefish: Lasius niger queens flying (13. Jul 2007 16:34)

16.27, 13 july 2007

Seen about 3 Niger queens walking around with still their wings on, so have left them. Shouldnt be long now. does it seem a bit too windy today for them to fly?

Sorry mate I believe you missed most off them there were thousands 2 days ago and a few hundred yesterday...

oh bugga. Well here it was drizzly most of the day yesterday. The two nests in my pond section still have queens in the openings to their nest and i havent seen any large wingless queens running around yet. Which part of sunny England are you from?

miszt: (13. Jul 2007 18:14)

depends where you are, in London they havnt flown yet, they are just hanging around the nest entrances

wish they'd hurry up! but its ment to be warmer this weekend, n sunny on monday, so hopefully...

miszt r u waiting to catch some queens too? How/what are you going to keep them in. Ive got a few test kit tubes you use for testing aquarium/pond water, but their not as long as the tube i got my M. rubra in from Germany

yep am waiting...n waiting...n waiting...lol

I'm using 150mm x 16mm test tubes, doesnt matter to much how big they are, long as they are at least 10mm in diamter, if they are to short to have about 10ml of water, get yourself a long needle n syringe, then you can top the water up :) (just do it slowly so you allow the pressure change to slow down)

i live in berkshire, i havent seen any flying around yet. although i just went to my shed to check on my m.rubras and saw loads of ants and winged queens. i didnt even know they where there under the slab of the patio i stepped on, hundreds of ants came out and about 10 winged ants.

maybe there more sensitive when they have winged ants in the nest and i disturbed them? maybe tomorrow round here they will leave the nest. i have been working in portsmouth for a few days and looked about there and didnt see any either.

I have around 60 queens my friend caught them and put them mostly all together so they're fighting im just waiting to get more test tubes and hope that most off them survive

The strongest of them all will :)

Do get tubes asap and separate them!

lol @ waiting and waiting. Thanks for the good advise on topping up the water supply in a smaller test tube miszt.
