sithmaster676: boosting formica fusca colony (11. Jun 2007 20:31)

hi all
i was wondering if it is possible to boost my formica fusca colony with brood from another species as at the moment due to heavy loses i only have 2 workers and the queen, so i was wondering if i could give them lasius niger brood of something as there is no formica fusca colonies in this part of the country

Hi all,

sounds like a good idear to me, but on the other hand the fusca ants might eat the brood.

Why not ask someone else to collect some cocoons and send to you?

sithmaster676: (12. Jun 2007 20:05)

because it is easier for me to collect some lasius niger brood or mymica rubra brood than have to send the formica fusca to me and i don't know anyone within the areas that this species live
but good idea

To all: If you are not sure about to answer you are giving say so don't give bad information.

To Sith: If you want to boost your colony (i'm nog found of it only if it is really needed) you best take cocoon from the same species. Other species are rare accepted and probably eaten.
You could boost a Lasius flavus with a Lasius niger . But not a Formica fusca with a Lasius niger . also not with a Myrmica rubra .

thanks for the advise and i have tried it anyway if it fails then it will serve as a good form of protein for them if not i will have some new ants
i have only given then around 7 brood in total mostly larva

yeah they were what seems to be accepted as soon as i put them in they calmed down then collected them and placed them inside the test tube they are in, when they hatch it will be funny because of the size difference
