Hey
Can all ants nest in YTong nests? If not please can you tell me which ones can :)
And how do you keep the tempreture up in the ants nest, as some ants need heaters
Thanks :D
Hello and welcome to the board!
In principle almost every ants are keepable in ytong nest. Only some exotic ants (like Atta sp, Oecophylla sp. or such "special" ants) need kinds of nests.
But an important aspect is the "feeling" of the ants, when they nest in such ytong nests. I mean, the natural way of nest is a nest in the ground, where they can grub and build "rooms and floors".
But, I think, you are a "beginner" and at first, you should keep "beginner-ants". These species are native and they could be live in a ytong nest
To heat the nest, you can use spotlights or a heat-mat.
Can anyone recommend a spotlight what I can bu from here what will make my antfarm 25-30 degrees?
Hi Sced,
You can look at this, maybe you find something there your like,
http://www.antstore.net/shop/index.php/cPath/46/category/lighting
http://www.antstore.net/shop/index.php/cPath/45/category/temperature
I use this one,
http://www.antstore.net/shop/product_info.php/products_id/672/cPath/46/lighting/Heat-Glo---infrared-100-W
keeps my farm at 22°c
Verry nice pictures from Messor here,

If i have more room i'm also going to keep this species. ;)
The links don't work, I wonder how long til antstore gets them in stock though :(
I'm sorry, they work for me. Very nice pictures.
Don't now, but maybe you can find them in a pet shop nearby.
It's kind of sad... but none of our pet shops sells ants. Spiders, bugs, snakes, rodents, etc. ... but no ants. :( I've looked everywhere.
Maybe one day...
@Mpir: I now what you mean. Here in Belgium they don't have them ether in a pet shop. (i by them most of the time here at anstore)
Maybe you can capture one (a queen) or dig a colonie out.
