netman: New setup questions (20. Jul 2006 14:01)

Hi all

Received an Antstore Glass Farm Arena + Lasisus Niger Colony
Just a couple of questions regarding a new setup.

1. When introducing the ants to the arena do you have to cover it so that no light gets in? I have read that ants do not like the light and may not settle.

2. Keeping the ant farm humid. Is it best practice to place a tube down one side of the arena filled with sand and loam and then water?

1 you have to cover the nest area. they don't like light in there nest, the rest of the Arena you don't have to cover

2 you need to keep the nest a little wet. not to much. you can do it with a tube.

this is how i do it.

- i have a Y-tong nest i keep standing in water so it is a little wet
- my sand nest i spray it with water 2 times a week (depends from the weather)

to prevent them to break out you can use (you can buy them here at antstore, at the shop - Glide material)
- Fluid PTFE GP1 10ml (best one)
- paraffin oil 10ml (cheaper, a little less better ;) )
- dishwashing detergent 10ml (you better take this one from your mom ;) )

and to make sure they don't come out i cover it up with a top.

Good luck

will vasaline do?

i don't think so. you can try it. ;)

your better make sure that they don't get out. so maybe you better use something from above.

I was contemplating using Vasaline, but as its Petrol based i was a little worried, as Petrol(eum) is lethal to ants....any updates on this thread? been a while lol
