Ok so I would like to start keeping ants, I have nothing so far and a budget of around £100

This is what I have in my basket and I will add and couple of questions after

Messor barbarus queen and workers
Starter kit m
Food mix for grain collectors
Anti escape lacquer

I know that they need a dryer area for the bread, do I need to provide another small area or will they make it in the main one?

you feed them in the arena (the wider, larger one). this one is to be kept dry at all times,
the nest should be more or less moist (not wet), Messor barbarus live in dry areas, they will keep the brood in the nest, probably where its warmest. they need at least 21 °C in the nest. max 26 °C

In the first Year You can easily Jeep them in a testtube. A Second One You can use as a water reservoir.
