Camoth: Do Lasius niger eat protein jelly? (1. Aug 2014 12:50)

The first period of time I'll probably be able to catch flies for my colony, but it's likely I wont always be able to.

I ordered protein jelly from Antstore and I was wondering if anyone has given this to their Lasius Niger before and if they took it?
My colony is still really small so I don't feel like spending money on a box full of worms or whatever and then having to throw over half away every couple of weeks (and those things STINK up the fridge!).

I tried it several times on different species. Not even once a good result. But you can try it.

The best for your ants are flies.

Thanks. I'll give it a go and tell you if they take it.

For now, the flies I catch with my electric zapper will have to do

How much worker do your colony have? Even until 100 workers, 7 flies a week is way enough, but as long as they transort and use is, its ok. So you can have some days without getting insects. On some days you catch 2 or more and all is ok without a hunt for an half a hour.
edit: After some weeks you get a good feeling about it.

So far in 24 hours they have eaten 3 flies (!!!) and there is only like 8 workers.

I was just in the pet store and they let me have 7 maggots (like fly larvea) for free to try. I cut one open, but they haven't touched it yet. Maybe that's because they are already full. There's not many of them outside the tube like there were yesterday.
