TheWoolman: Ant species (10. Jul 2014 12:31)

I have already got a flourishing M yrmica rubra colony and M anica rubida as well as some Lasius queens. However I want another ant species, but don't know which ones to get.
I preferably want:
Ants the don't require heating (central europe)
Are reasonably sized (1cm +)
Grow to reasonably fast
Have a large colony size.

Choose Messor barbarus, very easy to keep.

Messor are good as they are easy to keep, they are large, but they do require hibernation as far as I know. Pheidole [Phedole's] dont require hibernation ( some of them ) but they are small, fast growing, escape artists. I think it is Pheidole pallidula [Phedole Pallodula] that has soldiers. So thats something to be interested in later in development of the colony. Either way, whatever you get, keep us posted on how they are doing :D
