Hello karikas!
Always the best spiecies to start with is Lasius niger or Messor barbarus.
Actualy I don't like the sandwich type of nests, because:
1: Its not good start for ants
2:The irrogation will be so bad that the bottom will be dry as a desert.
3: Bad air circulation.
That is only my opinion. You can start a colony by:
1. Finding a newly mated queen.
2. Finding a colony and dig it up and get the queen. (Not the most human way to do it, it is so barbaric)
3. Buying an ant queen or a colony of Antstore.net
ecause you now have to cho
I cant give you any more advises because you now have to choose which species you will keep.
My opinion is find a species that can endure low humidity. I can see the frame is wood. If the wood get wet they are easy for ants to "chew".
And make the sandwich thinner. It will be a lot easier to observe.
The best spiecies is the local one, they can Adapt the clime of your region well ,
In portugal Messor barbarus is a good Choice。
