riwa: Help with deciding ant species? (12. Aug 2010 11:43)

Hi. I'm new to Ants, but have kept reptiles and amphibians for many years.

Only thing I know for sure is that I want a species that:

Has a queen
Different sized ants with different roles (castes?)
Can cooporate to take down larger prey
Doesnt hibernate.

-----

The hibernation is important since I have no way of solving that. The ants so far that Ive found interesting are:

Pheidologeton diversus - Seems to be the perfect ant for me but is maybe to hard to keep as first ant?

Messor barbarus - Needs to hibernate?

Camponotus substitutus - Seems interesting too but havent researched much about them.

Are there any more ants that fit my list better?

----

I was thinking to get a pre-built antfarm here but dont know which one to get.

I was thinking about:

Acryl Ant Display 40x2x30 cms - wall -> As nest
Acryl Ant Box 20x12,5x5,5 -> As foodbox

But this may vary on the species I wish to keep? Also, I understand that the Ant Display is too small to keep a nest in.

I have many questions! Hope for some answers :)

Regards
Richard

Maybe Pheidole pallidula or Pheidole noda/nodus

No hiberbnation, real castes, mouch cooperation, not as difficult to keep as P heidologeton spec, grow fast if there is enough protein.-
