im in truble (sorry for spelling) my Queens and her yuong need dead flys or incses but as the weath in england not good (rain) can u tell me any other ways i can make them food for them? also there lasius niger

hi i have 2 colaneys of lasius niger in 1 i have 1 queen and 20-40 lava just starting that one no need to fed yet. and in the uther one i have a colaney of about 5-10 workers , 20-25 eggs/lava and 1 queen whot shud i be feeding them i have tried a bit of frute and sugerwater but thay just went around it no in trest in it then i put in sum flys thay eat most of them but whot els can i feed them?. also the colaney is still in the testtube that thay came in when will thay muve out and make a nest ?? pleas get back to me ASAP! :roll:

You can make a honey + water mix for them which they will enjoy.

It is good to feed them insects aswell, you can go to most reptile shops sell live locusts, fruit flies, crickets, wax worms etc.. just make sure to kill the insect first when using with small ants or you may lose some...

Also i give my ants a little bit of fruit every so often

thanks i do give them sugar water and the horny went off a few days ago and i anit been to town yet and ill go to the pets shops for food

Hello antboy,

please make some nutrition experiments with your ants, they have in many ways their special taste which they like the most. In some times my ants are crazy in getting some honeywater, in some times the want only insects. The reason: Larvae are the only develepment stadium of the ants who needs food, so in order of the amount of younger, older larvae the ants want other food.

So now more praktice: Try death insects you can found in the garden, in front of your house.... e.g. spiders, flys, daddy longleggs, gnats, beetles and so on. During the winter I feed my ants some fly larvae, which you can by in every pet shop or fishing shop. In the fridge this one will hold for more than 6 weeks (because the lower temperatures reduce the speed of the development).

I have placed dead insects into food container. The ants don't seem to be eating. (It's a new colony)

Perhaps the Insects are to dry, or they are to hard. The most ants like pinkis or other small soft insects.

I feed my ants on fresh locusts or crickets, i take the heads off of the insects and all of my ants like them, obviously this is not a definate for all ants but locusts bodies are quite soft and when the head is freshly removed the ants can get to the softer insides.

i whass advised to give young kolonies(my queen ahs 3 workers) to give them sugar water. but what should be the consentration of that how many sugar on how many water? someone also adviesed me to put some milk with it voor the ants is this ok and if how must this be concentrated?
