Jamcom: Very odd Lasius niger behavoir (2. Apr 2009 21:56)

as you no the queen died, i put the workers in the ant far mto begin digging tunnals for my next colony and let them die out. but i have found a big batch of like larva/brood the workers must be laying eggs, and are not eating them i have seen them feeding them etc there is around 10-12 of them :D, any ideas?

If there's larvae it's probably from the queen befor she died.

Even though L. niger workers ahve been known to lay eggs in rare occasions these usually never develope into larvae and later ants. If they do, they'd jsut become males anyway.

just look how they develop. if they do belong to the queen, they'll probably die out anyway. :hang:
I would'nt worry to much about them.
even if they do hatch they wont survive very long without a queen (the new colony would probably adopt the larvae and the workers)
