Zagone: Advice on Hibernation (28. Feb 2009 15:30)

So, I have this little trouble with my ants.

I have no where to put my ants to season them over the winter months. Tehre's no way they'd fit in the fridge, so
the only option is the balcony becase my dad wouldn't let me hijack the guest-room for 4 months. :P

So basically, what I'd like is if anyone have any working ideas of how to be able to hibernate my ants on the balcony, without them running the risk of freezing to death. Keeping it warm is easy, but how do I regulate that it doesn't get too cold or too warm? Any proven insulation materials or so anyone can suggest?

you could try wrapping it in blankets, that would probably keep it at a regulated temperture , but every now and then you should check the temperture just incase its too low

Id suggest bubble wrap...

Hmm, yeah. I could chuck in the thermometer reciever close by the nest so I can see what temperature it's keeping I guess.

Bubblewrap holds heat? I didn't know this. I'd prefer bubblewrap since it doens't get soaked like a blanket would.

Or some other cushioning synthetic material.

you can get insulation stuff to go under the bubble wrap too..

good luck when the time comes, try to keep it out the rain lol :D

Hehe, thanks. If I keep them under the bench out there no rain should be able to get to them at all.

Thankfully we now stand on the brink of Spring, and the next winter is far off. :)
