Hi, i have 2 small L asius niger colonies (around 30 workers each) and i have been keeping them in antstore starter set basins.
I have been feeding them crickets and mealworms with water, sugar water and honey water. one colony has made a nest in the sand/loam and they are all in there. i have some videos on youtube if you want to see them, it's called lasius niger starting new nest. If i am doing anything wrong pleases tell me and could anyone give me tips about hibernating. thanks. (queens collected from nupital flight Back in july) :D :D :D

Hello AndyB and welcome.
Well you started of just fine. But you didn't hibernate them ?
Normally they should go into hibernation from October till March. That period the temperature should stay below 10°c. That's when the queen stops laying eggs and take a period of rest. She needs that.
If you didn't do that this year make sure you do it next year.
Good luck.
hi jimmy, thanks for the advice, i was told that hibernating them this year wasn't important but it looks like they were wrong, next year i will slowly lower the temperture right down to about 5-10. thanks
