Ok im thinking of putting sand into my nests but there so large i want play sand as its cheap will childs play sand work with these ants

L asius niger
M yrmicia rubra
M essor barbarus

and its not to dig and bury it only a 1 cm high level just to make a flooring

It should work, but if you use sand like that you have to note it might contain bad things for your ants, that could kill them. You could heat the sand in your oven befor putting it in your arenas, which should take care of alot of harmful things.

Or microwave it. If you really want to be sure, put it in a pressure cooker, then dry it in an oven. But that's really over the top. :grin:

But seriously... i use excavator sand for M essor barbarus. i do have a small problem with spider web mold. I have a little air compreesor and I alternate running it in my different basins for 12 hours or so. it does help.

How large are your colonies?

lasius niger has 6 workers
rubra bout 100
and messor is on her own its all new colony really i got them and winter came

i can put the sand in the oven i guess that isnt a problem
