Gulaas: Mould! (1. Feb 2009 17:38)

Hi!

I was away for 2 weeks and had had to leave my colony unanttended during hibernation, to stop them drying out I put the lid on. Unfortuantly this stopped ventilation and some mould has grown ontop of the sand. I am back now and have removed the lid from the nest, will the mold just disapear as the top sand dries out or is there anything I need to do to get rid of it without harming my ants?

What kind of antfarm is it? I would probably recommend removing the mould and hope no harm has been done yet.
Ideally you'd probably want to make sure it won't mold again with granulation or so.

Its the starter set 2 from Antstore, the mold in inside the farm not the arena, just a bit worried about disturbing my ants too much while they hybernate

Did you put granulate in the bottom of it? That's supposed to help avoiding mould and has worked on my antfarm so far. I've had it for a year without any mold appearing. Is it alot of mould, or just at the surface?

I have a layer of clay granulate at the bottom (about 3-4 cm). The mould is just two patches about 1 cm each of mould on the very top layer of the sand. I was thinking just pouring some more sand over it to starve it of oxygen and dry it out futher. Just dont want to disturb my ants too much

pouring sand over it won't help ive tried

just use a teaspoon and take it out.. its the best time to do it while ants are in hibernation.. ul disturb them a lot less than if they was awake.

Yeah. You really need to get it out, and even then there's no guarantee there won't grow more later. But getting it out is alot better than just pouring sand over it. ;)
