hi all

i have only had 1 connly of Lasius* niger and now that they have died i am thinking in geting a new connly but i cannot decade on Manica * rubida or M yrmica* rubra.

i have heard that they are pritty much the same ant except Manica rubida* are a little bit bigger. i just cant decided at all. wich one would you get out of the two and why?

i will all so be keeping them in a antstore starter set 20x30 will this be suitable

I would prefer Manica , simply because they are larger and thus easier to observe. Manica look pretty similar to Myrmica, although they live in different habitats. Various Myrmica species are very common in various environment in whole northern Europe, and most numerous in shady, moist places like leaf forests. Manica live mostly in moutains, in dry and sunny places. They also like concrete pavements in cities. Manica rubida has also very powerful sting for an European ant, so make sure you aren't alergic, as this would be VERY painful if so. Fortunately they aren't agressive towards humans at all, if only you don't mess with their nest.

Well firstly i'd be asking how your lasius died.. as they are almost impossible to kill... If however it was not your fault at all.. then id go for Myrmica* quite simply because how easy they are to keep.. and they will grow pretty darn fast.. not to mention they are pretty darn aggressive and happily will kill anything u put in for them. They are best kept in a ytong too.. so would save you going out and buying an extra tank from antstore.

They are both fine species to keep. Maybe Myrmica rubra grow a bit faster than Manica rubida so they are a little bit easier.

my L asius* died becouse my set up was on the floor under my computer and we have just got a new dog and she pushed it over and all my ant fell out including my queen and my dog killed her so i gess it were my falt :( i think i might go for Manica * rubida mainly becouse they are a little bit bigger. i cannot find any information on them dose anybody know of any websites were i can find a bit more about them

I kept them for a while. ;) you can see some great pictures of the here . What do you want to know about them ?
