im going for Formica fusca. They are a medium sized ant and easy to look after.

@needforfreedom

Good luck with Formica fusca. I've never had this species but I've read on this forum that they are quite dificult to keep. They are anthill building forest ants so they need a lot of space and care and there is constant risk of fungi and mites infection from nest material. Keep us posted on the progress when you'll have them.

I myself don't have experience with them (Formica fusca) but i read you can keep them in a Y-tong nest to.
But please do make a diary here on the site. ;)

hi all
@ needforfreedom i hope you do make a diary on this species as it will be intereseting my colony i will get next year will be simple as i dont have much experience with ants at the moment maybe in a few years i will get a more exotic species than just lasius niger

Sced: (18. Nov 2006 18:28)

Sith
Instead of getting another Lasius Niger colony you could get a Myrmica Rubra colony as they are easy to look after

sithmaster676: (18. Nov 2006 18:58)

hi
@ sced i dont know how to look after myrmica rubra do they need a heat lamp what do they eat and what is it best to keep them in e.g ytong or kept in an ant display such as the starter set.

They can live in all types of nests.
They eat honey and small insects
They need the same care as lasius niger when it comes to heat and humidity.

sithmaster676: (18. Nov 2006 19:29)

A sced so they would be fine inside an ant display and would be fine in the room temperature of my bedroom?
and i have also seen on the net that they can have more than 1 queen in the nest am i correct or not?

Sced: (18. Nov 2006 20:49)

Yeah this is correct, that should do them finely.
Thought if you choose to by these ants and wnat them with more than one queen they sell them on the french page.

sithmaster676: (19. Nov 2006 11:10)

@ sced
thanks for your help:)
is it better to have more than 1 queen or doesnt it make to much of a difference?
and if in several years down the line my colony produces winged males and females could they be mated with in the nest and join the queens of the already produced nest or is this unlikely?
have you used the site provided by you before and if so is it any good. but you can get extra queens from antstore so i dont know which to use now
