It is best not to have them in your tank (farm). You can prevent this. Don't use ground from outside and be ware what you feed them.
Not all bacteria or mites are harmful to your ants but it better not to have them.

And under three different topics just to make sure. Nevermind... you can ask whatever you want, but just don't be surprized if you don't get answers...

Sith........I just keep my L.niger in an airing cupboard which has a vent to the outside world. The temperature varies depending on my central heating and the outside temperature but tends to be between 8 and 10. They seem to be fine with that.

I give them food every three weeks although they never make a move to eat it! I know they probably wont eat again untill April but id feel bad not putting it there!

The way I see it the outside temperature above AND below ground is highly variable from day to day and more imprortantly at night. So as long as the temperature doesnt Suddenly drop from 16 one day down to 4 the next the ants will react and survive fine. Try not to worry!

Maybe you should get yourself a more exotic species so you can focus your energy on them during the winter months......or maybe spend time building somthing nice for your ants to explore when they come out of hibernation.

I have a single L.Flavus queen with a few eggs........Im hibernating her but Im worried she wont survive :(

I also had a huge disaster while redecorating my ants home was knocked over and the contents went EVERYWHERE! Luckily for me my ants had actualy nested in a connecting tube between a basin and display and so didnt seem to get too disturbed. I can only hope that the stress of this and the energy they have no doubt had to spend rebuilding :(

Hi needforfreedom, i also have a Lasius flavues queen hibernating but there are some workers with here to. So i hope she is going to be fine.

Indeed sit, maybe you worry to much. Hibernation time is peace time for us. the ants don't need much and you can build/rebuild a new farm for them or something.

Hope everything works out.
Greets.

Hehe! thats why I go to the gym In the winter.

Im currently working on hollowing out the middle of a small dry log. Im planning to drill a number of holes into it from diffrent directions. Hopefully this will provide a nice place for a new colony to live as im planning to get another in the coming year but larger ants this time.

sithmaster676: (17. Nov 2006 20:08)

hi needforfreedo
i 2 am gettin a new colony in the following year around about april when ants in this country come out of hibernation i plan to keep mine in an ant display with an arena attached but i am still only going to get a lasius niger colony as i dont have enough experience and funding to hav a more excotic species:)
