Pheidole pallidula is European ant and they all need hibernation. As they are mediteranean species they need hibernation which is much shorter and with a bit higher temperatures. Nevertheless few months of rest does them good.

That is true, they are from south Europe. (Spain, Italy, ...) The temperature is much higher there than here. The have hibernation from half November till late Februaries. about 3 - 4 months. European ants from here (Belgium) have 5 - 6 months of hibernation.

glad to hear.
i am planning on keeping my lasius niger colony in hibernation from now until late feburary - early march will this be enough for a small colony of lasius nigers ( about 12 workers and queen)

maybe a little short but better than nothing. ;) I'm planing to keep my Lasius in hibernation until the weather here is better. about 15°c.

sithmaster676: (12. Nov 2006 18:25)

is this a bit short so how long should it be for here in the uk im not really sure when the temp gets hotter here

normally if you wait until march (end of march) it is enough. or until the temperature is about 15°c outside during the day. ;)

sithmaster676: (12. Nov 2006 18:35)

so end of march would be better.
i dont no when ants stop hibernating in this country but i am sure that will be long enough for them to prepare for the next year.
as soon as they come out of hibernaton will the queen amdietley start producing eggs or will she take a short while.
and at the moment my tank gets up to 12dc through out the day is this to hot

JimmyVe: (12. Nov 2006 18:38)

No 12°c is not to hot as long as it is one day, if you now what i mean. it the temperature is 12°c for a hole week, maybe they will wake up early.
The queen starts laying eggs very soon after hibernation.

sithmaster676: (12. Nov 2006 18:42)

it is hard for me to keep the temp of my tank at a steady heat as the light i have is one during day light so i dont know how to control it any suggestions

if it is the outside temperature, it is good now.
