u culd use a Jam Jar if you dont have much space, connected with a bit of Aquarium Air Tubing :) remeber to seal up the jamm jar well tho, pref with a bit of Aquarium safe silicon sealant (defently not household silicon!!)
I may sound stupid but a jam jar literally? with jam or filling it with sand/loam mix and stuff? ;) sorry for being a lamer
Yeah, dont understand that jam jar too
But the basin you need for a Lasius niger colony is so little (20x10x10)
no lol an empty one, make a whole in the lid, then u can feed a tube into it and connnect it to the farm :) then drop food into the jam jar when u need to feed them, and to clean, juz rinse under a tap :D
jar look like this:

Oh....okay....now i understand it. Pics could say more than thousands words
But as i said before: There are small basins for a arena. I believe you have the space of 20x10x10 or?
In deed a small out world is a must, nicer for the ants and much easier for you to feed the ants and to clean up there mesh. ;)
OK guys, thank you for the tips, I think I'll go with the JamJar project :D
I'll look up some neat&small jar and connect it to the display.
Anyway, a couple of my ants are still not sleeping... still a lot to do (I mean going around and around) :)
Another lamer question: do they need fresh air during hibernation? The testtube is plugged with paper towels and though it's not a hermetic seal but I don't think too much air goes in&out...
The air should circulate or you may become some mold. Its okay when you open the farm a few days per week and let it open for a short time....
I close up my tubes always with cotton, no mould so far but it would not harm the ants (ore tube) if you open it up once a week. ;)
