They like it better in the dark, especially the Queen.
They eat anything, - nectar - insects -.... you can try out with things.
I would say about 4-5 weeks (10-14 days as eggs and +-2-3 weeks as larva)

Hi folks little feedback on my starter lasius niger colony, after some intense activity days after that it arrives, it have eaten and made supply of some bugs and reduce completely the opening of T-Tube there is trhee day ago it rest in tube. Not any worker go out.
someone can confirm to me that this is a normal behavior?
Because I do not want to disturb the colony removing the darkening-cover from the T-tube.

about your ants. they are just fine. there is not much activity with a small colonie. As long if there is food and water nearby they will survive. ;)
I wish this could be interesting....this explain many foraging and exploring beahviour of Lasius Niger workers.
