Yes in my experience you do have to ventilate an ant farm or you will get lots of condensation which over time could turn into mould. I used an electic drill in mine to create holes which I covered up with netting which I sellotaped on.

anyone thinking about drilling holes into glass, make sure you have the right drill bit, and get sum advice from an experience glass cutter, theres plenty about, would hate to hear that peoples farms have shattered! its easily done.

Also be sure that your species wont get thru anything you use to fill the wholes, I would recomend some kind of Wire mesh, as ants cant chew thru it, Lasius niger wont get thru matirial netting, but Camponotus and Pheidole will in seconds ;)

I've not needed ventilation in any of my farms however, i think its important to check the tempreture fluxuations in the room you keep them in, as this is more likly responsable for any condensation, aswell as over watering

Will it take 10 days for a new queen's eggs to be larva? And how long to be coccon? (talking about l. niger).

Most ants nests are ready for the nupital flight and I think that as soon as its hot and dry (not the wet weather currently) they will go on their nupital flight.

the same thing happened in my garden. many queens with no wings where just wondering about finding a place to nest. the best place is just looking on the floor.(good if you have a garden)
