Grass seeds are excellent for small colonies too. I gave my colonies (i had 2 which 1 i sold) those and they started eating them right away (~5 workers). Now there is some majors, so i guess i could give other seeds too. They seem to do fine with grass seeds still :)

Also don't forget to feed them insect to. They need them also.
@mpir: they like a bit moist part in the nest to (at least mine do). If you keep the nest 1/5 moist it is enough.

Ofcourse they need insects :) All ants except leafcutters and maybe some very special species don't.

except leafcutters

Who told you that. They also like insects. Maybe less than other species.

What leafcutters eat insects? if so nothing big like others is it?
Thanks

I don't think leafcutters need insects. They will be fine with only leaves too.

I had a colony for about a year and the accepted insects (small). Not much but they did. ;)
