First of all, the reason why they didn't take food also could be that they where in hibernation. And the reason that she is dead, i think you stressed her out a little bit.
Not to worry, you can't turn back time, only learn from your mistakes. To bad for the ants but better luck next time.
btw: Messor barbarus do attack live food, believe me. ;) If your colony is big enough they even can take on crickets size 6. ;)
hmm i no this seems abit over the top, especily since i couldent even keep the Lasius queen how hard is a Pheidole pallidula colony to handle, ive learned there excape artists from being on the fourms but i think there awsome i really want to get one now, but do you think theyll be managble or should i just stick to Lasius niger or one of the other 2, (i should be quite good keeping heat and moisture ok because i have a bearded dragon and did have a chamilon (cant spell :S)
Well Pheidole pallidula will escape from pretty much anything... apart from that they are fairly easy to keep.. they will get to be a big colony too.. your only problem really is they are tiny... smaller than Lasius niger.. so if u want a ant u can see and will hunt.. this really isnt it.
They are not hard to keep, but not really easy, don't forget if you don't keep the nest moist enough the colony can lose half there workers in one day !
hmm is there a fairly easy to keep fairly big jaws (i like that :) ) agressive fast growing sort of ? i guess one would be Myrmica rubra just not big jaws :P thats why i like p pulia they maybe small but the majors etc have pretty big heads ;)
yes but the majors still are smaller than your average myrimca rubra worker!
Everybody likes big ants that don't hibernate, but you have to learn how to walk before you start running.
try keeping easy ants first, then once you feel conftable and you have learnt from alot of your mistakes, move onto more harder to keep ants. thats what im gunna do. (i dont want to loose a colony out of inexperience, thats why) :D :D :D
Yeah. Everything I learnt from holding Lasius Niger was invaluable for future colonies. I made so many mistakes
that I won't be making on my next species. ;)
would red ants be good though? and is there anyone here who could supply a colony with like 2+ queens?
