eheheh...ok...I'll wait for this autumn!
Now they are about 5 workers, when do you think I have to give them first seed??
At the moment I'm breeding with honey, mosquito and bug..normally they eat one a day.
Your very lucky Alby, I have around 7 workers and ive not seen them eat even one of the bugs ive gave them. However they have sealed themselves into the test tube... with all the seeds ive gave them lol.. not sure if they are eating them or not tho.. cant see any ant bread :s
this morning I controlled the test tube and there was 8/9 workers, but every day I see go out less and less, sometimes a worker foraging..today only one , it was eating the marmelade. They eat insect during the night, because it remain in the arena for all day then at morning there's nothing.
@ Steve: don't worry about that, the ant bread is very hard to see, i saw it for the first time at a picture, i never spot it inside of the nest with my eyes.
@ Alby: do they accept the honey ? (none of my Messor species eat it) you can give them seeds from about 10 workers.
I see them eat only marmelade, I'll try too change honey because it wasn't so good
@ Jimmy why do you say give them seeds at 10 workers or so as I mean what are they going to eat before you give them seeds as they cannot eat insects can they ?
they can eat insects but i think the point is that at 10 workers+ the demand for 'ant bread' is needed so thats when u give them seeds, plus before they wont really do much with the seeds but i may be incorrect lol
ur not ashhad ur right.. they do eat insects.. at least mine do... and you only give them seeds after they have a few workers cos just a couple are not strong enough to chew the seeds into bread..
Yes they do eat insects, as a mater a fact they need them. Also when the colony is bigger you must keep feeding them insects.
When the colony is smaller than 10 workers, they just collect the seeds but don't make ant bread from it because the first workers have there hands full of taking care of the queens and brood. Also the don't have such strong jaws as the next generation.
So the workers of this species eats insects?
