none of my ants like crickets in boxes.its better to give them alive.

the shopping list sounds fine for me

edit: btw, if you will use sand nest without humidity, ants will not dig in there, because they cant in dry sand.

how would I make it humid then?

KiamCameron: (27. Apr 2008 18:41)

I advise you not to feed live crickets to your ants atleast not untill they have a big colony as a cricket can kill your ants!

Tramp as you have to ask the question 'how would I make it humid then?' I would highly recomend you go for Lasius niger, and read the caresheet carefully before doing so, rather than any of the other species mentioned on here, although most are fairly easy to look after, Lasius niger have the broadest spectrum of enviroments they can inhabit, and you will have allot better chance of not killing them :)

I wouldnt advise feeding live crickets (except pherhaps Micro) to any of the species mentioned on this thread!! They need allot of protien, and will happily kill and eat your ants!!

Mmmmh fair enough, however I would still like to know how I would change the humidity, as it is the only way i'm going to ever learn, is it just a case of the moisture of the sand/loam in the basin affecting the air? or would you need some specialist equipment to effect the humidity?

Tramp: (27. Apr 2008 19:42)

Also any live food I would be giving to them would be maggots or something else I could easily get from the fishing tackle shop nearby so no live crickets for me :), and I might as well try dried crickets it's not going to hurt anyone (unless of course my ants are allergic to them  ) .

miszt: (27. Apr 2008 19:46)

as I said, read the care sheet :)

Tramp: (27. Apr 2008 19:53)

I've read the care sheet and i'm unsure I do not see anything about humidity apart from the bit saying

'Lasius Niger do not require any specific humidity levels, however the nest doest need to be kept damp.'

The rest of that section seems to refer to groud moisture, I'm unsure if you mean ground moisture when you say humidity (as that is all I can see there) but humidity is to do with the amount of water in the air.

mzfckr: (28. Apr 2008 14:31)

you dont need any specific humidity in air for l. niger or m. barbarus, but you do need to keep nest moist. btw, there is a little tutorial how to make nest moist in the care sheet.
