i get what you say miszt it is diferent outside than inside all i was trying to say if you get ants from aclimate that is lik what your inside climate is like they will need less care than getting and ant from the amazon and trying to keep it in iceland
about thermostats, i bought one (about 30eur) in a reptile shop.i tought it was pretty good but the temp difference is 5oC.so choose a good one!
Maybe you should consider keeping ants of some local species and hibernating them in refridgerator. I do so and this is really easy. You won't need extra heating, because 25C will be good for them. And you can catch a free queen if you are afraid of wasting money, and let them go free if you decide you don't want them anymore.
And try to do something with this touch fear :) I have a strange feeling that ants, other insects and spiders really love to walk on people who hate this, and ignore those who don't care. It's probably an example of Murphy's laws. Try to think of them as they were cats or something, only smaller :)
@JimmyVe:
I've looked into the Camponotus substitutus. I like the look of the black Messor barbarus better. But hey, beauty is only skin-deep ;)
I see they are not available at the Antstore. So again: that is an issue since I don't have the slightest clue where else to get them but here. And I will have to start with a queen and a few workers because I know I'd be hopeless without them, so buying some from you guys without a queen would not be a good idea I think.
@ Tail__: The ants that live here naturally are really small. Too small if you ask me. They are the kind that live in between pavements and sidewalks. I have little interest in those to be honest. But thank you for the suggestion. How much space do your ants take up in your fridge? My fridge is really small. Do you put them in a container of some kind or do you just put the entire farm in there?
@mzfckr: It seems Antstore doesn't sell to the other offerer. Do you know any shop that ships them to the Netherlands? Where can I get more information on their care?
You will still need to drop the tempreture graduly for 6-8 weeks before putting them in the fridge, which is why i didnt suggest that to you before as this doesnt seem like it will be possible for you, and yep you put the whole setup in the fridge, Messor are small ants, also M barbarus require hibernation, there are some tropical species of Messor tho that may be worth looking into, and they have interesting behaviour, in that they setup 'bread farms' where they chew up seeds to make 'ant bread' :)
fleur, sorry i didnt mention something. search on google you will find it.
I really like the behaviour and look of the Messor. I just have the issue with the hybernation. Maybe I can talk to my parents and they can keep the ants in the barn during the winter. I doubt they will be prepared to feed and water them though... I'd have to discuss that with them.
Also; transportation would be somewhat of an issue. I have a car, my parents live about half an hour drive away from my house, but some roads here are bumpy and it would stress them out and potentially shake up the nest or make it fall over during the trip. Pff... I just wish there was an easier solution to this. :?
The exotics are too difficult and I can't get any of them as Antstore has none, the European need the hybernation.
they dont need feeding during hibernation :) they are asleep!
Really? Nothing at all? I figured they would not really be "asleep", just very slow moving and non-breeding. Then there's just the transportation issue to adress. Any suggestions?
By the way, I like the Camponotus ligniperda a lot too.

You mean probably Lasius niger, but there are many bigger species living in this climate, including very large Camponotus and medium-sized Serviformica, which are also easy to keep.

I put only the nest part there, without arena, and this is really small (20X20X1cm). Generally miszt is right and they need some time, it can be 2-6 weeks, with medium temperature (ca. 15C) before putting into real winter sleep. In this period they consume very little food and aren't very active, so they don't need much care (they never need much, anyway). Don't you have any kind of balcony, cellar, attic or any other little piece of external space where you could place them for a few weeks in autumn? If not, taking them to parents barn is also a good solution, even if the car ride would be a bit stressful, it will not harm them in any way, if it is only once in a year.
