Max... Just wondering but whats gonna happen to the ants once you have finished doin your report?
Mr.Q: why colonies accepted other queens? When occasion do they?
Thanks very much
Hello ;)
So:
Lasius flavus, Lasius niger, Lasius emarginatus, Camponotus lingiperdus, Manica rubida by putting them into fridge (only workers!) for 3-5 days, and then by letting in queens.
All species from above + Messor structor, Myrmica sp by keeping workers without queens for 2 - 4 weeks. After this time I've let in queens, wich were adopted without problems or after small fight. Sometimes niger, flavus, rubida and Myrmica sp adopted new queen after 3-6 days without queen in nest.
Regards, Mr.Q
OK, thanks! :)
In these species, if the queen die, what happen?
that's very interesting. thanks again everyone, we handed our rough draft for the report in today, and it looks good!
SteveUK28: I know that my little brother would like to take care of one colony of ants, I think I'm going to sell the other one.
don't worry about the fate of the ants: we treated them well during our research, and i'll make sure they find a good home
Its because their orginal queens were not present. If you tryed to introduce a queen into a nest with the current queen still residing i there it would have been a diffrent story all together!
In deed, i'm trying it out now myself, i have a colony ( Formica cunicularia ) where the Queen died a few months ago, the workers are now in hibernation and i added a new queen to the colony, still in a tube. I hope they accept here after hibernation.
good luck jimmy with your little experiment
hope it works
Does any1 know if it's possible to let Lasius Niger workers help a Messor Barbarus queen? (I know that L.niger is aggressive so think it won't work)
Thanks Ashhad1 i hope it works to. ;)
That would be a very risky experiment Thomie. I doubt it would work.
