I think this explains all. ;)
Hope this answers your question.
I have a question regarding moisting the ant nest in the Glass farm.
Antstore sells glass farms of various sizes each with 2 cm thick (or 6 cm for the XL version).
I can see that a tube insertion as suggested in this thread can be easily set up. However, in order to add water through the tube, the only way is to open the long narrow lid on top of the galss farm and pour water into the tube. But while doing that, how do you prevent the ants from escaping? (Especially those fast moving and vicious ones!)
The only way I can see is to apply some kind of slippery material like PTFE but this is tricky to apply as the galss farm is narrow. It would be great for those seasoned ant keepers to post a photo or two about their formicarium set up in one place. I know I can find some of these in the forum, but is here and there. In addition, mostly emphasised the ant colony itself but not the detailed formicarium set up.
I have one of those sets and i simply put the tube to the far right (my connecting tube to the basin is left) - directly under the unused 'bung'. Then to water unplug the 'bung' and use a pipette...
I use flexible tubing, that is long enough to reach the bottom of the farm, and then comes out of one of the holes in the side (rember to seal the edges with somthing, cotton wool is ok if the ants are already resident, but silicon sealant is better, but only if the farm is empty!!), then you can easily add more water to the farm using a syringe :)
I do not use glass farms but i can put here a picture where you can see how i use the PTFE.
If you use it like this the ants should not be able to escape. If you like you can also leaf the lid off but it still is better to use it and only take it off for feeding ore for a short time.
