But on the other hand, a couple of hours ago the sun started to shine and now there are thousands of them on the ground and in the air.

Now days it is the perfect weather for swarm time, keep your eyes open. and only catch the wingless queens. (males are not good)

-yes ,Lasius niger will have swarm time sometimes at this month ,last year it was in Slovakia 23.6. .... In Germany or in England it will be ca sometimes at the end of month.

I captured a queen myself today, don't know the species, i will post a picture later.

So does it have to rain first for a day or so then next day be very sunny to make them come out?

in summer (or spring) if there are warm days, if it is going to rain or just did, the ground is not so hard, so the queens can easily dig themselves in. So there instincts say them to fly with this weather. ;)
