Hard to say. It really depends on how fast your colony grows. I would give it a few years. And if they outgrow it you can attach to it another one just like this.

I'm not sure I understand your question. :dontknow: Keep them hibernating at least till end of March. When will you buy the new tank it is up to you.

Lasius niger is a good species to start with, and if I'm right (if i get the question right) they are indeed in hibernation now, if you want to wait until they are out to buy, it is best that you wait until the end of March.
The thank is okay, but like Mpir sad, it depends on how fast your colony grows. but you can always build on. ;)

It is not better to wait until hibernation is over. But if you get them now, they are not very active. They just sit there. ;)
If you buy them after hibernation they are active, so you can see them move around and feed them and see some nest activity.
Beware, if the temperature is to low the chance is great that they don't send them. It is better not to ship ants below 5°c.

i think i will get them in the end of march next year coz they will be active then but as some of you may tell from my other posts on a different topic i have another brand new colonie in hibernation at the moment so what i will do if the worst comes (which i hope it doesnt) i will keep a colonie inside the stater set at the bottom of the page and then when they get larger than the set can hold them i will move them to my 3 foot by 1 foot tank that is kept outside :)[web]http://www.antstore.net/shop/product_info.php/products_id/751/cPath/58/starter-sets/ANTSTORE-Starter-Set---glassfarm-arena[/web]

You can do that, but don't put 2 different colony's in one farm.

sithmaster676: (8. Nov 2006 07:08)

no i wont wot i meant was that if my colony outside doesnt survive the winter then ill move this colony into my outside tank:)

Lasius niger are able to control their number of population. If the aquarium or formicarium will become too small for them, the queen will stop laying eggs. Only when workers number is down for various reasons she will lay eggs again. If you attach new formicarium to the old one they will expand there.
