Take a look with a magnifying lens.
The good thing about Myrmica rubra is that they can have multible queens and if you do it right you can add loads. Remember that you should start with an easy ant first off. good luck with whatever you pick
If you like Myrmica rubra maybe it better to start with them than one of the Camponotus species you like, the grow much slower than Myrmica rubra and so are harder to keep.
I just started with 2 Myrmica rubra queens and 11 workers and after 2 weeks I have quite a big pile of larvae. Though they normally would have to hibernate, I keep the bassin warm and they just seem to do really fine! :mrgreen:
