you have all what you need in the starterkit (farm and container, tube, ground, food). The infobook is at this moment only in german, but we want translatet in english or french too.

In what way do you keep the keeps the tanks humidity level up so the tunnels dont break down? or do i just need to wet the them 1st time when adding the sand and loam and they do the rest with the water in the cotton wool. Do i need to spray a fine mist of water over it every once in a while with a water sprayer! or will a bird bath for ant do the job for me!

If you use loam then you have a hard material the tunnels can not broken.
make the ground only a little bit wet not to much.
For lasius niger, you can use the bird bath, with cotton wool in the inside.

skelta: ALL DEAD EXEPT QUEEN (27. Mär 2005 15:53)

Hi there

I got a lasius Niger colony in January and my ants didnt move much. I then found out that they hibernate but now all of the workers have died. They are shrivelled and in odd positions so they must be dead. The queen is still allive but doesn't move much.

Can anyone tell me

1. Will the queen lay eggs and rebuild the colony or is she likely to be dying?

2. If not how can i get more workers, do I need to loose the queen as I gather new ants might attack the current one?

Thanks in advance , any advice will be appreciated.

normally, the queen lays new eggs, if the situation OK.
Apart you can give brood of another colony in addition to your queen.

Thanks very much for help

How do i know if the situation is ok?

If they don't like their nest will they not lay eggs?

Thanks again

Hello skelta,

Many factors are important.
Temperature, humidity, enough food. no mildew.
Is all OK, than will get your queen many new workers.
Do you have a photo from your formicarium? can you upload it?

Greetings Martin :D

Hi

Thanks again for the amazingly fast response

My ants are in a blue gel based house called ANTWORKS.
From what I have read people suggest this isn't very good for them, do you thinks the queen is just not happy in there?

If I buy a proper formicarium with sand, mud etc and put the queen in it i guess she would be happier?

Not sure whether to let my queen go in my garden and buy a whole new colony if this is why?

Cheers Martin

Yes, if you have only an "antquarium" its bad for the ants, because they can no bring the wask out. Many people don't like this "toy formicarium".
But if you want used, than make an extern container on the "antquarium".
Better is a Formicarium with normally ground.
In Germany it's illigal to give pets outside free (garden). I don' t know how is the law in UK.

Greetings Martin :D
