jartok: Ant hibernation shed (27. Okt 2008 14:19)

Hi i put my LASIUS NIGER AND MYRMICA RUBRA into the shed now its around 10c in day and prob be around 2c 4c in night but when temps drop its gonna go down to -4 -8 possibily is this safe for them ?

if not could i wrap towls around the containers to nock it up a bit

JimmyVe: Re: Ant hibernation shed (27. Okt 2008 19:24)

Are they in a y-tong nest or a sand nest. If they are in a sand nest they could take lower temperatures. Wouldn't harm them if it stays above 0°c.

well alot of the workers are in the sand under the ytong but the queen and brood and some workers in ytong . reckon a towl around it ?my room is just too hot no matter what i do

gabranth: Re: Ant hibernation shed (28. Okt 2008 08:30)

a towel won't affect the temperature

jartok: Re: Ant hibernation shed (28. Okt 2008 10:42)

well it was 1.2c i put towl around and it went upto 7.4c if its to risky im bringing them in

gabranth: Re: Ant hibernation shed (28. Okt 2008 10:49)

leave the towel outside for a day then test the temp when you rap it around your ant colony

jartok: Re: Ant hibernation shed (28. Okt 2008 11:08)

ok nvm that experiment it only nocks it up 3c it was 4.1c in the day the night times will just kill them the queen alrdy come out and got that cold she could barely move now she moving as i moved them back theyll loose couple weeks hibernation prob till temp drops properly but its better then death

gabranth: Re: Ant hibernation shed (28. Okt 2008 11:14)

my queens are in hibernation and never move until i disturb them

jartok: Re: Ant hibernation shed (28. Okt 2008 12:15)

my room is sitting at 14c but thats dropped from 19 in week the temps are dropping now so should stay inactive soon

Ant mad: Re: Ant hibernation shed (28. Okt 2008 13:16)

Try putting the farm in a cardboard box then stuff newspaper around the sides and it stays around 5oC thats what I do and its worked so far :D
btw i just leave it out side so it could be warmer in a shed.
hoep it helps.
