That is true, they are very slow movers. ;)
They are still in the tube, but i added more tubes to it. They are now in 3 tubes. Soon the colony will be big enough to move to a y-tong nest. If they are in need of space they will move faster. ;)
So the colony is spread over 3 test tubes, I guess the workers just moving the eggs to tube with the most room.
Do you cover the tubes? & have you attached a nest area? pic's? :D
4 weeks for my first lasius to move into their display ain't too bad then.
4weeks are not bad at al. ;)
In deed they are spread out over the 3 tubes, i have covered them. The don't like light in there nest. If the colony is to small they can not keep the y-tong clean, that is one of the mean reasons why i keep them in tubes until the colony has about 100 workers.
I shall try to post some pictures soon.
More pictures would be good. :D
Does it take approx. 1 year for LN colony to reach 100 or so workers, depending on conditions?
That's what I like about Lasius niger. They are tough, hardy and adaptable ants and usually do well in the process of colony rearing from a single queen. Great job on them.
it does take a little while to get that many ants but my queen progressively lays more eggs my queen laid a batch of 20 eggs which some are now workers and others are cocoons and as more workers come more eggs are laid there is now other 50 eggs.

Nice pictures Jimy! They are wery good feeded... The cocroach, which are they eating is American common roach? Periplaneta americana? Do they like them like food? I know about these roaches, they have somethink like ,,chemic" smelting... Aslo L. niger eat them?
@Sam: this colony is about 1 year old and my guess is that she has about a 100 workers wright now. But this al depends on the weather and the feeding and lot of other stuff. It is possible that you have a colony from 1 year and still only have 20 workers.
@ Bob: That is true, that is why this species i perfect for beginners. ;)
@ Biolog1: Thanks, on this picture they are eating a Red Runner (i'm not sure where they are from, i buy them at my local pet shop) They like them a lot, as a mater affect i give them to all of my species. ;)
How many is in your colony now Jimmy?
I think circa 140-160 ;) ,but I want to see these numbers by Jimmy.
