mate: PTFE (31. Mär 2008 15:33)

How long can stay PTFE on the aquarium and haw wide must be?

miszt: (31. Mär 2008 15:35)

depends on the humidity, anything from a few weeks to 3 months +

generally you should make the strip about 2 times the length of the largest ant, so eg for Camponotus, 3cm is a good width

anthor: (31. Mär 2008 15:40)

the time until you have to renew it depends on the number of your ants and is variable, you can see if its necessary
wideness: i would say 3 lengths of an ant

EDIT: rmpf miszt was faster ;)

@ Anthor:
I couldn't imagine that renewing the PTFE has anything 2 do with the number of ants present in the farm??? :S

JimmyVe: (31. Mär 2008 15:44)

Me to, 3 times the larges ant. ;) (just to be sure) Some of my farm have the PTFE on for about 1.5 year without an ant getting trough. :)

I can say from my own personal experience that if the basin is kept quite dry the PTFE will last more than one year. I still have some basins with PTFE that was aplied last year and ants still do not escape.

Moiser: (21. Apr 2008 16:30)

So adding live plants to a basin will lower the amount of time the PTFE stops ants?

JimmyVe: (21. Apr 2008 21:11)

How do you mean Moiser...

The humidity lowers down the PTFE's live. The higher the humidity the sooner you need to refresh it.

I dont fully understand you moiser, but adding more plants would cetainly distract the ants from climbing the glass, but i dont think PTFE is worn out buy ants walking on it.
