8 to 10 weeks to hatch. Workers live for 1 year and the Queen 7 to 14 years.

Skippy: (27. Aug 2007 21:48)

Yes ,world record of longest life of queen is 29 years by Lasius flavus ;) ,and Lasius niger queen can live to 20 years :)

Its abit dumb off the colonies because after the queen dies they all die or will they adopt a new queen I dont think they will :/

badman: (28. Aug 2007 11:42)

thats the natural order of things. If they are a successful colony they will have swarmed and spread their genes.

Kiam: (28. Aug 2007 12:39)

Yes but will they accept a new queen?

Dr.House: (28. Aug 2007 12:52)

no

[Edit:] Okay, my fault ... that's not right ... as food they might accept her :-)

Kiam: (28. Aug 2007 13:09)

lol is there anyway you can make them accept her in captivity? I heard if you put her in a test tube and workers outside they start getting her scent or something...

badman: (28. Aug 2007 16:20)

They might.... but I don't see why. All (simple) life exists to propogate it's own genetic information, to expect an ant to look after an alien queen is to expect it to behave altruistically, which I doubt an ant is capable of.

The situation of putting eggs form one colony into another is different, as the ants are being tricked.
