miszt: Ultrasound Misters (24. Jul 2007 12:43)

Do ants like/dislike them? I'm looking for a solution to humidify one of my setups, and it looks like a nice options, but as it uses ultrasound i'm not sure wether it will upset the ants or not?

anyone have any epxerience with them?

JimmyVe: (24. Jul 2007 13:01)

I do not have experience with them miszt.
I now ants don't like to much sounds.

yeah thats what i thought, and there is sum research suggesting that sum ants may use very hi freqz to communicate at short range, so it may interfer....will leave it out i think, shame, it looks very kool lol

I would recon you could compare it to living next to a subway station with constant traffic ;)
For most technical questions, i prefer to find cheaper solutions then electrical machienes. If you find your humidity isnt high enough, try covering up the tank a bit (If already using a cover with gaze or the like, cover up the gaze), add moistkeeping materials to the substrate, or take care of a higher evaporation by heating wettend areas of the tank.
What species are we talking about here?

Camponotus herculeanus, I wasnt planning on running it all the time, just in the morning so they have 'morning dew', would only have run it for about 10-15 minutes a day, but I'll just stick to using a spray

yeah, but it doesnt look as nice lol nvm, i'm gona try and find out a bit more info on the mister freqz and ant responses, although tbh i doubt anyones ever given an Ant a proper hearing test lol

Varban: (25. Jul 2007 17:52)

I do, given my ant farm is next to my speakers they get a hearing test every day at 6 when i get back from work

mpir: (25. Jul 2007 18:07)

I did too. :D All my colonies are in my room where I also keep rather loud surround sistem. They don't seem to mind it. More than music they are anoyed by vibrations when I move around the colonies.

miszt: (25. Jul 2007 18:09)

yeah, but those freqz will be ones that ants hear all the time anyway, the thing i'm worried about is the Ultrasonic freqz interfering with them

JimmyVe: (26. Jul 2007 17:58)

Maybe you need to try it out miszt, this way we all know if it bothers them ore not. ;)
