I was wondering. If you place a hygrometer in ant basin like for example in picture below: does it really tell you what is the humidity in the nest or is it telling you what is the humidity in the room?(because basin is open on top) How accurate is it and wouldn't it be better if you would put it somewhere IN the ytong next to glass?
Hi Mpir.
As i could see you use my picture from my polyrhachis dives colony. These ants dont have a Y-Tong nest. They use their larvae to spin their nests. So i couldnt put the hygrometer in the nest.
And normally is the basin closed. But for the pictures i opened it....
So the results from the hygrometer is right.
I guess if you put it in an open basin, you have the humidity of the room.
If you really want to see the humidity of the nest you have to place it in the nest.
But i think it also depends from the kind of nest you have.
Yeah. But the basin is closed....i only open it to humidify the basin. So all the time the hygrometer shows me right data.....
And the hygrometer is right next to the nest. I couldnt place the hygrometer IN the nest :)
@Purifier
Don't take it so personaly!!! I only used your photo as an example. Lots of people use PTFE and similar things and keep their ant basins open. I did the same thing. But recently I've bought the hygrometer and I'm just wondering how to use it properly. That is all.
No no.....you misunderstand me too i believe :)
I dont take it personaly. I only would say you that my hygrometer say me good stats.....but you´re right. If i let the basin open i only have mixed stats from the humidity of my basin and from my room.....
yes that is true if left open you get the stats of the room around your tank if the lid is closed then it will give accurate readings of the tank and nest itself especially if you have weaver ants which i believe you have on the picture

I myself also place my hygrometer like you Purifier but i have a lid with ventalation (see picture) so it is the temperature of the room that i have (i guess) in the nest i'm not sure because i can not put the meter inside the nest.
