jeoff82: Mating flights (8. Jul 2010 17:45)

Anyone got any ideas when mating flights are likey to take place? Must be very soon now? Also do all species seem to fly on the same days or is it a case of one species only fly then next day a different species fly?

Most species already fly at the moment.
Lasius niger, flavus and others, Formica fusca and others also fly at the moment.
Mostly species like Lasius nuger fly at very hot days; Formica fusca fly before heavy rains.
Every species has it´s own time and its own wether to fly.

They r def not flying in the south east of England yet and it's been hot and dry.

Can be that you didn´t see them or live at a place where no ants live.
I don´t know the ants of england very good anyway.
Dry isn´t good anyway for flights mostly it has to be wet and hot like humidity 70-90% but I would say 80% are very good to await most flights!

Did I miss the flights in South-East England? I've kept my eyes open but seen pretty much nothing. One nest near where I live did have some reproductives hanging around the entrance one afternoon, but they didn't seem to be interested in flying, and nothing much seemed to happen that evening.

Now that we've had some rain, are they likely to fly soon, or have I definitely missed them?

I live in the south east and there where flights last Friday. I could only see L asius but I found one Formica queen. Today I am in Cheltenham and have seen one L asius queen so I think there may be a flight this evening. It's been raining on/off and is very muggy. I'm keeping my eyes peeled. Where abouts in the south east you from?

Near Oxford, but I was travelling on Friday evening because of a relative's birthday. It keeps working out this way. Grr.

L.niger males and females were everywhere when i went out and i managed to catch 4 mated queens which saves me having to buy one. Still would like a L. flavus queen but will just have to wait for them to come out in the next few weeks.
Any idea what weather flavus like to come out for there mating flights?
