I think there like the borg off of star trek! They spend there whole lives doing everything for the greater good of the colony. But in there spare time they party hard! :drink03: :oak: :eat05:
Anquietas what drugs where you one when you seen them playing.... ;)
I don not know everything about ants but i never seen them playing. :)

indeed, play does not exist in animals that have just a simple action/reaction 'brain', play is not just for fun, its about learning skills to survive and only exists in species that learn from their group or parents, for eg mammals

Roflmao.. now that did make me laugh Jimmy :P
I think that for conciessness you need a complex nerve sistem and big brains. Bigger animals like cats and dogs have somehow "limited" conciessness. Ants are just simple insects - not much brain power there. So I don't think they have conciessness.
anquietas: you say that the "disabled" worker is still alive after 1.5 month becuase other helped him. I have different experience. One of my ants was trying to tunnel in Ytong and somehow got stuck head first in one of the air bubles. You could see that she is struggeling to free herself but none of the ants helped her. So... no conciessness there.
Well that seems to depend on the situation. I experienced that when a worker felt into the sweets and i pick it out other workers lick it dry. (probably just because it is food) but like you said mpir, when one of them gets stuck the other ones don't really care much about that worker and just leave her there to die.
Don't really think conciseness has anything to do with it.

i was talking about my termites not my ants and for those of you who say that one needs a big brain to have conciessness take a look at alex the african grey. his brain is not so big but he was able to comprehend our language and speak it correctly something other animals cant do chimps as far as i know cant, dogs cant, cats cant. all 3 of wich have bigger brains than a bird so brain size would most likely not have anything to do with it and jimmy have your ants ever had a time when there was absolootly (sry for bad spelling) nothing to do in the colony? apon reading more about this i found out that they like some humans get done all that needs to be done then they have fun. so its quite possible that you have not seen them when they have nothing to do i have only seen it2 - 3 times out of at least 2 months now and it was in a starting colony with only a few workers so the lack of workers may have had something to do with it.
Parrots are highly intelligent birds, and compared to an ant, their brains are huge lol
However the idea that Parrots understand what humans say is highly debatable, they are able to mimic humans very well, but that does not show understanding at all, even still, comparing a bird brain to an ant is not very practical, they are two very diffrent systems
jimmy have your ants ever had a time when there was absolootly (sry for bad spelling) nothing to do in the colony?
I have a lot of colonies and some are pretty big. In bigger colonies there are always some workers that are doing 'nothing'. I never seen them 'play'. In the world of ants nothing is impossible but i don't think they will 'play' just for fun.
