so you just use the heat mat to warm it up first, then switch to Light ?

No the lamps are used to heat up the out world, the mat to keep the y-tong warm. ;)

I usually suggest refrainin from using a heat map. it will dry out the substrate very fast, and in nature heat usualy comes from above.

Yes that is true, but i only use lamps of a low wattage, just to keep the out world warm enough.

Also, using heat mat may couse that ants will start to dig as close as possible to mat, and You won't be able to see them. And talking about heat lamp - You can always use lamps with high woltage, but only combined with temperature regulator :)

Hi Mr.Q,

I only use the heat mats on top of my y-tong i have horizontal y-tong nests and on top of the nest is the heat mat, so the heating is coming from above. (like in nature. ;) ) So there is no digging there.

heat mats work ok underneath as long as the humidity is controlled well, and i find they are espcially usefull at night for some ambient warmth, as during the night the heat wuld come from the ground
