im not a great lover of boosting either but in this case it was necessary because the colony lost a lot because of disease and were down to there last 2 workers, but now they have 2 formica fusca workers and 1 of the lasius niger workers which hatched from the brood i gave them.

Hi owth01 and welcome in this forum!

Yes ,like Jimmy said ,it is better to get these camponotus to ytong nest. In nature it have nests in old wood and also under stones ,so in soil ... it can be ,but ytong is better ;) ,plaster is not good for big Camponotuses ,because they can to make emental (cheese with holes) from your nest very quickly like my big colony of Camponotus vagus 1 year ago  and run away ;) ,so first one is : ytong material

If it wash up to me i would like to live in the rain forest, then the most interested species just live in my garden. ;)

That´s a little out of topic, but I have one friend in Brazil. His father have a big farm and there´s a rain fprest, near it. I like to live in rain forest soo much, there are milion´s breeding of insect, and lovely ants...

woo my camponotus herculeanus colony has gotten bigger. There are 6 workers now and 4 cocoon thingys (technical langauge there lol) the workers seem to just be looking after the eggs. When will the ants emerge and leave to forage? I have to admit though when i 1st received the queen i put the test tube in the nest without the bung covering it. So the queen covered the end with soil. will the workers undo this?

JimmyVe: (15. Jul 2007 12:08)

No, if the tube (nest) is not covered they will cover it up there selfs (if possible) Most species don't like light in there nest.
When will the ants emerge and leave to forage?
When they leave there nest to cater food ? Soon, small colonies go out at night, in nature they are more save in the dark. But if the colony is getting bigger they will go out during day time to.

Lowth01: (17. Jul 2007 19:06)

well theres a big hole in the soil they used to cover the end up with so i think they have started to look for food. theres 6 lil ants. how long does each ant live for?

JimmyVe: (17. Jul 2007 19:14)

The first generation of ants (workers) does not live very long (depends on which species it is). The next generation live much longer.

Example: Lasius niger first generation lives about 6 moths up to a year.
next generations 1 year up to 3 years.
