miszt: Polyrhachis dives (29. Nov 2007 16:04)

I've just recieved my new colony of Weaver Ants :D Good strong colony, with lots of Alates, that even during the stress of moving several hundred miles accross Europe are still mating with one another lol

Unfortunetly my PTFE solution was all dried up, so i've had to create a tempory island, untill i move in Jan, when i will be making a 2m high vivarium with a tree for them :)

They are aggresive lil things, my room stinks at the moment lol fortunetly they've chilled out now and are busy collecting up all the alates and dead ants

Good set- up miszt, and beautiful ants, keep up good work  :D How big is this colony? They look ,,adult", and they have a nest there, can I see...

Very nice miszt, nice farm to !

Did you make that nest yourself miszt ?

Good that they arrived in one peace, not like your Camponotus ;)
Well....hope everything go well with your colony! Hold us on topic!

there did seem to be allot of dead ants in the colony, but the workers have cleared them up, and already the water is full of dead ants lol they've also decieded to dig a massive hole in the peat, so the water has turned a murky black already! they are messy things!

am very suprised by the number of dead ants in the water tho, it is a bit worrying, i recond theres at least 50-100!! i've added some detergant to reduce the water tension, incase some are getting sucked in while clearing up....but its not a major issue, these guys are very incestus, and i've seen at least 6 queens being mated and de-winged today!

its getting on to being a mature colony, 250-500, hard to estimate how many there actually are really, but i think 250 is a good estimate, even with the dead ones

a few managed to climb out of the water and onto the otherside, so i'm gona have to get the PTFE sorted asap lol they sat on top of the lid looking as angry as they culd ready to squirt formic acid on me when i approached...but a pair of tweezers soon had them back in the nest :)

Did you make that nest yourself miszt ?

nah, they came in there own nest, it looks very similar to a wasps nest up close, mixed with all sorts of rubbish they've picked up to add to it

JimmyVe: (30. Nov 2007 18:05)

That are in deed lot of dead ants, maybe it from the long trip they have made.

miszt: (30. Nov 2007 18:18)

possibly, although they where sent 24hr delivery, i suspect that many of them where dead in the container they where being kept in @ antstore, there are some being carried out occasionally even today....hopefully the colony will stabalize soon

I've noticed some strange behaviours, like groups of ants ganging up on single ants, carrything to the edge of the island and throwing them off! alive!

Purifier: (30. Nov 2007 18:28)

 maybe some saboteurs ^^
I had some Polyrhachis, too. But never could see a behavior like that O_o
