Hiya Guys,
I might be able to get myself a small colony of these lovely ants soon. But before i commit i got a quick question... Is it possible to keep them in a ytong setup?? Ive looked around as best as i can and most of you that have them keep them a tank and let them make there own nest. Im up for that, but i would also like to offer them the choice of having a ytong.

The problem is they want to weave all the time with their larvae so eventually you won't be able to see in the ytong nest so its probably best to keep them in a basin type setup, but to start off with I can't see a problem with using a ytong nest.
Thats a nice experiment. Offering those ants the choice to live in an absolutely unnatural nest instead of waving their own one. But dont forget, those ants have an ability to humidify their nest on their own, if you moisturize the ytong it might just mould instantly.
ok, fair enough.. in that case il give them a small ytong, with no moisture. It will def be worth the experiment i think, however i do think they will most likely choose to make there own nest.. time will tell :)
I too think it would be a nice experiment but please do make it as fair as possible which I'm sure you'll do. Eg heat both the basin and ytong, etc. Plus even if they choose the ytong they will weave in the tunnels eventually and you won't be able to see into it.
When you planning to get them then steve?? :)

ok.. i have my new ants.. and i believe.. there is 2 queens and 1 worker.. ive seen no brood or eggs at all.. they arrived in 2 very dirty test tube in a tub that had dirt and dead grass inside.. so its kinda hard to see anything..
If i give them a new clean test tube will they move in and be able to stay there for some time.. or am i gonna have to keep them in this dirty tub ??
My advice is allow them to move out of it by leaving it open with the 2 new nests heated and dark, I'm sure they;;l move
