UneXisted: Pheidologeton diversus in a sand/loam nest (20. Feb 2010 16:01)

I will receive my Pheidologeton diversus colony with 500+ workers this thursday. I will keep them in a sand/loam sand nest with the antfarm from antstore.

What do you guys think? I am reading that a lot of people have difficulties raising a P. diversus colony in an ytong nest. Besides, in a sand nest they can expand the nest by themself.

Its is in deed very hard to keep these ants, also in a sand nest. I wish you good luck.

Yesterday i moved the colony to my sand/loam ant farm. During the rehousing some workers died because of the drought in the outside world. A lot of people warned me for this, now i can confirm it. It were not a lot of workers.

Right after they were set, they started to dig.

The setup consist of a 3L plastic box with an 30x20x6 antfarm from Antstore. I have not used the included lid, because of ventilation problems. I've made my own lid to avoid condensation problems.

The setup.

This morning i noticed that they were moving the sands towards the PTFE stripe. I could have seen that coming. That might be a problem.

The PTFE problem.

Because of the PTFE problem i am already starting to brainstorm about a new setup.

Anyone has some idea's?
