thanks ratgreen :D

They arrived this morning, about 50+ of them, and I can say only one thing...

WOW!

They really are beautiful ants, unlike anything I've ever seen, watching them make their way around the tank is great, they are obviously very visually orientated, and extremly aggresive.

They are settling in at the moment, they've eaten 6 crickets, 4 meal worms and a few wax worms already, I'll take some pics tonight and post them up :)

I initially had a 4 tier electric fence, I've reduced that to 2 tiers now, one at 24v and one at 48v, upto 20v they didnt react at all, at 24v they get very annoyed and attack the metal, but they have learnt very fast, infact I saw only 5 get a shock, and they made allot of noise and ran around communicating with the other workers, now they avoid the glass completly :)

The Stridulation from them is really interesting, I've identified 3 sounds so far, one when attacking food, which is a kind of clicking sound, another when they where on the electric fence which is sounds a bit like an angry cricket, and lastly when i poked around the entrance of their nest, which was something like Cicada's*

*I had to remove soil they had piled up on top of my pillow moss, checky things! lol

they make noise? SWEET!!! thats cool. i must say the ants look really primative, which is also cool.

is the queen bigger?

miszt: (2. Apr 2008 19:28)

Not significantly no, this species has egg laying workers with a strict hirachy, aswell as a Queen

heres a few pics...not very good ones, because i dont want to distrub them for a few days now until they have settled, so no super macro shots with good lighting...

some of them look closer to 3cm long to me!

@miszt: This species does not have gamergates. It happens from time to time that dominant workers lay eggs, but thats not normally seen in a colony. And of course this eggs aren't fertilized so you will get males.

I also keep this species. I know most of you don't understand German, but there are also some pictures - here you have a link: http://www.antstore.net/viewtopic.php?t=4686

From what I've read Gaster, its pretty common for workers to lay eggs, but as you say they do not lay fertilized eggs, but produce males

Saw your pics last week :) very nice, also spent some time reading thru via babelfish

Damn miszt, you're a lucky man. ;) These ants look really great. I hope they do well. (great pictures to, keep them coming)

@ Gaster: so you also have these nice ants. They look great. Sadly my German is not so good. :)

I thought about translating the journal into English, but I guess my English is much too bad. Maybe some time in the future.

Lucky, but poor

Also extremly lucky I didnt burn my house down last night, I switched the electric fence off last night, as I hadnt had time to install a fan to keep condensation levels down, very very good job i did! this morning was very cold in my house, and the glass is covered with huge droplets of water, including the electric fence!

Fan is now installed, and working nicly, fingers crossed tonight it will keep the condensation away, so i can switch the fence back on tomorow!

However I am going to install a 30 second timer in the circuit, so that the power will cut after 30 seconds, just incase the fan fails or somthing! Also a loud buzzer that will sound when ever something completes the circuit of the fence eg water!
